There Can Be Only Several

I bet I’m the only person on the Internet who made that joke! Looks like the Highlander franchise is getting a reboot, courtesy of two of the guys (there were probably about ninety total) who wrote Iron Man.

I have a special affection for that franchise: I have watched more Highlander-related filmed entertainment than I care to admit. People throw this word around a bit much, but it really was kind of a visionary movie — I think it was an early example of the urban fantasy, putting magic in realistic modern settings, that you see so much of in Harry Potter. Here’s a quote from the Hollywood Reporter piece:

Davis [a producer of the original film, who’s also working on the new one] said the new “Highlander” will not just be a remake but will incorporate more backstory elements and prequel aspects that will be fleshed out to expand the story line in a way that is inventive yet faithful to the original story.

He also said romance was key to the series’ popularity and would be a central theme in the new film.

“I would hate to think that people viewed ‘Highlander’ as a sword fighting movie because it’s much more than that,” he said. “The issues of an immortal falling in love with a woman and knowing she’s going to grow old and die in your arms, those are very romantic issues to deal with.”

OK, but it’s basically a sword fighting movie, right? Well, they can’t screw it up more than it’s already been screwed up.

Speaking of Harry P., there’s a 10th anniversary edition on the way, with pretty new cover art from Mary GrandPré (if that’s how you spell her name). Here it is:
