X-Men Update: Why Am I Always the Last One to Know that the Danger Room Is Sentient

I don’t know about you, but my contact with contemporary X-Men continuity is pretty sporadic. There are so many different media and alternate worlds involved, and there are all these catastrophic events occurring all the time. Every time I even try to figure out who’s in the X-Men anymore I get tired.

Which was why I was relieved the other day when Marvel sent over a handy summary of recent X-events, as part of an effort to publicize Joss Whedon’s run on Astonishing X-Men. And OK, maybe I’ve been away for a while, maybe I’ve been away for about 20 years, but I learned some amazing things. Like for example, Emma Frost is in the X-Men now. And Colossus died. Bozhe moi.

And here’s another amazing thing: the Danger Room is sentient and always has been. The other day (in Astonishing X-Men #8) there was a Sentinel attack (this was part of a running conflict between the X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D., and also a being called Ord who comes from a place called the Breakworld). Kitty Pryde shepherded some students into the Danger Room, and the Room went nuts on them! It tortured the students, then took control of the Blackbird, crashed it into the mansion, and built itself a body out of the wreckage. Then it kicked the X-Men’s asses. Then it walked away.

By the way, Emma Frost betrayed them and turned evil again. Who could have seen that coming. And Scott is in love with her. And Colossus came back to life.

I just thought you should know that that happened.
