This game is terrible, are you crazy? The camera is the worst in an AAA title since perhaps Ninja Gaiden, and all of the ports are catastrophically bugged. As in, "you can't complete the level thanks to the bug" bugs. As in, the publisher was cynical enough to make the public itself the beta testers. Eidos is in fact under pressure by consumers to recall the Wii version as it is almost unplayable.

Then you have Eidos actually trying to intimidate and censor reviewers, setting a truly awful precedent. They are quite open about it too, claiming the bad reviews will prevent their game from selling (Duh? Who's in their marketing, Dick Cheney?) http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/11/21/uk-tomb-raider-underworld-reviews-under-810-silenced-until-monday/

Why isn't any of that discussed on this blog?

I remember making fun of my buddy in Denver because Call of Duty 2 or whatever was getting stale so he just HAD to buy Tomb Raider Legend Anniversary, in the same way he HAD to buy Crackdown and King Kong, and other tepid games.

But I would never make fun of Lev Grossman for playing Tomb Raider.

I think I last played Tomb Raider in like 1997, shortly after trading in all my Super Nintendo and Genesis consoles/games in for a Playstation, which included this and some other underwhelming games (although Syndicate Wars was extremely fun). I forgot about Tomb Raider within a week or two, but still an all-around fantastic barter on my part.

Since then, I'd always thought Eidos would sink into obscurity, but in a good way, like the Commodore 64. Instead, I've bought or rented a handfull of games by Eidos, always followed a week later by my wife saying something like "I knew you wouldn't play the battleship game [Battlestations Midway] very long."

But kudos to them. Countless companies like EA, GM, Anheuser Busch, have made billions making fairly mediocre products that are consumed by many and offend few.

If you spend more than a week playing that game, you should probably think about going back to Fallout 3.
