The “Only Ten” Lists

The Time culture critics have just come out with their Best of 2008 Top Ten Lists. This is useful. These guys know what they’re talking about. It’s their job to have thorough knowledge of their areas of expertise. Movie critics see every movie. TV critics watch every TV show. Music critics listen to every album. Then these worthy writers painstakingly reduce their oeuvre down into the ultimate demi-glace of concentrated cultural stock – a Top Ten List.

I’m not a critic. I’m a workaholic screenwriter with two screamaholic kids. I don’t have time to imbibe twelve months worth of movies/tv/music/architechture/video games/whatever and carefully sort out the best of the best (of the best) for a nice well-rounded list that shows the breadth and depth and of my taste. I only have time for typing scripts and yelling at children. So I came up with my own set of lists: the “Only Ten” lists. These are the lists of the “only ten” things I had time to do in each category during 2008. These aren’t the best of the best. They’re the “I was lucky to get to even do these.”

Really? You were willing to sit through Mamma Mia! but didn’t listing to a single album all year? You only listen to audiobooks because you love them so much?

    Wow.

  • safetydancer

You didn’t read Swartzwelder’s latest? For shame!

Being a workaholic artist myself and only being able to read a book / comic on the occasional trainride, I have discovered the audiobook this year. Audiobook is the only way I was able to get trough something huge like the Dark Tower series.

Alphabetical ordering is no excuse for putting your Simpsons at #8 on an “only 10″ list. For shame indeed.

You’ve really got to work on reading silently, Matt…

I’m not a huge fan of audio *books*, but I do love the short story podcasts. Escape Pod (and the sister podcasts) and StarShipSofa are personal faves (disclaimer: I’ve had a story published in the latter.)

Ever read a book by a woman?

“Ever read a book by a woman?”

What the hell kind of question is that to ask on a blog called “nerd world”? (Unless you mean LeGuin or McCaffrey, of course)

  • Cliff

Ever read a book by a woman?
    .
    What would be the point?

  • Dave

Silly rellimarual… women aren’t allowed to write books. If we let them write books, what else would they ask for? The right to vote?

Is NerdWorld dead or something? This is an awfully long vacation if it isn’t.
