I heard about this this morning, and felt like someone had punched me in the stomach. He was always one of my favorite SF writers. Scratch, that, one of my favorite writers period. One of those writers that I was always very much aware was way the hell smarter than me. I never felt like I was getting everything he'd laid out in his books, but I always enjoyed coming back to them and getting a bit more of the puzzle every time. Sadly, sadly, sadly missed. I mean, how can you not like an SF writer who never set a story on another planet? Who else openly longed for the end of the world in a romantic fashion? There'll never be anyone like Mr. Ballard again.

Also like P. K. Dick, Ballard never wrote for Battlestar Galactica. It's almost eerie.
