I was always surprised that they never pursued the whole “Young Sherlock Holmes” thing 20 years ago. Would’ve been a decent series of flicks. This movie strikes me as a spiritual sequel to that one.

When I heard Downey was going to be playing Holmes in a new Sherlock Holmes movie I was excited, when I heard Jude Law was Watson, I thought great. When I found out that Guy Ritche was directing the film any and almost all excitement withered. Yes withered. I liked smoking barrels, snatch, revolver, and even liked rocknrolla. But Sherlock Holmes is not British crime-noir. Make the film with style but don’t butcher a beloved classic in order to do what you want and envision at the expense of quality material available. I will undoubtedly see it, and if it fails, complain to my friends who don’t care. It does seem they are forcing the classic feel of Holmes like a square peg in a round hole. Take ques from the new Star Trek. Lines were not forced and came naturally and organicly.

I dunno, I’m not feeling it. I know there’s a big trend of re-imaginings (sparked by a recent television show that everyone has seen) but I’m not sure that Holmes really warrants it.
