#1 is probably refering to "Firefly" which was Brilliant and a tragedy that it was terminated. The movie "Serenity" which was lifted from the series is one of the most enjoyable and brilliant SciFi movies ever made.
The "how do we deal with Aliens" theme is similar to "V" which was OK, but not gritty enough ala the original (simplisitic) "Battlestar Galactica." (The re-envisioning was awesome.)

And I am supposed to be working but am planning on seeing "District 9" in an hour so I am very psyched about these comments.

Thank you to Lev.

I've been preaching for a while that the more VFX people become directors, the more we will start seeing effects become less real. Letting the VFX artist actually be an artist who tells the story rather than just a craftsman faking a setting. Most VFX movies use effects as perfect as possible, wanting you to suspend your disbelief - wow, a walking car! Yet the watcher's criticism of the effects - anything that looks fake - immediately takes them out of the story.

The new generation of VFX movies will use heightened reality, or even impressionistic reality, to enhance the storytelling. Steve Zissou is a great example of this. All those fish were clearly, beautifully, fake; artfully speaking about the world and, after the first shock of it, pulling us further into the story.

It's like the transformation of theatre through the 60s and 70s, as directors and designers stopped trying to recreate realistic settings, and let the sets become part of the storytelling.

I'm curious to see what Blomkamp does, and which way he goes. Is he an artist? Or a craftsman?

There was some other recent sci-fi story that featured a gritty, realistic documentary style including having things not in focus, and dirty, banged up spaceships. If only I could remember the name of it....

I'm actually geeked up for this movie. An original concept instead of a sequel, prequel, remake, or something based on a toy sounds pretty good right now.
