Having read the Twilight books (several times I must abashadly admit) and also being a lifetime, active member of the Mormon church gives me a perspective that differs from the author.

As I read the books I was actually disappointed NOT to find much in the way Stephanie Meyer expressing her faith. There is absolutely nothing in the meadow scene that would make me think of the mountain meadow massacre or refute it, or even distract from it.

It seems ludicrous to suggest that she somehow planned in advance to have her book about teenage vampires come out at the same time as the anti-mormon literature in some attempt to distract from them?

The author used this article to express his personal beliefs about the credibility and Christianity of members of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints.

If you want to know who the Lamanites and Nephites were (And who they ARE) you can read the Book of Mormon online at lds dot org. You can also research for yourself whether we are Christian or not. A more non-member friendly website is mormon dot org.

Thank you.

Fascinating stuff. It sounds like he's got a whole different perspective on Christianity than what usually percolates around our culture - and I had only the barest inkling that all this was running through the Potter books.

This is a great article. I'm so glad to see that other people are finding out that John Granger has some very special insights when it comes to reading Harry Potter. I've yet to read Twilight, and likely won't, but I've read his commentary about it and find it interesting.

I first "met" John in one of the Barnes and Noble classes after Half-Blood Prince came out, and have learned so much more about all kinds of literature. It was like getting to go back to college without paying tuition and having to take a final exam. Oh, wait - if I remember, John did give a final exam of sorts. But the discussions were much like all the things in this interview, so it didn't seem like work, just a great extention of the fascinating conversations. (And we are still talking all these years later.) I've since been lucky enough to meet John in person and Lev is right - he's energetic and such a delight to talk with about literature.

Oh, btw, masurix, yes, John is married and has a lovely family. All his books are invaluable in gaining insight into Rowling's books, as well as showing the reader why they should read or re-read some of the books they might have missed in high school or college.
