Welcome to TECHLAND

Welcome to TECHLAND. If you’re joining us from our previous perch over at Lev’s Nerd World blog then expect to see a lot of the same thing, but on a much larger scale. I know. It’s different, unfamiliar and somewhat frightening. We’re creatures of comfort and steer clear of change if we can help it but this is something different and special. Contrary to popular belief and what our name evokes, TECHLAND isn’t just about tech. Long story. You can read about it over here.

We, the contributors of TECHLAND, are all just a bunch of nerds that like talking about nerdy stuff. Said ‘nerdy stuff’ entails a lot of things that you might not consider nerdy and that’s fine because the line is fairly blurred these days. My MacBook’s Dictionary app defines nerd as “a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious.” I don’t particularly think of myself to be a fool or lacking social skills and I can guarantee you that everyone else on staff doesn’t feel that way either.

You might not consider yourself to be a nerd, but step back for a moment and consider the things you enjoy the most in life. I can guarantee that one of those things falls under the realm of nerd. It doesn’t matter whether your favorite game is Wii Sports or Modern Warfare 2. Perhaps you enjoy reading Robert Kirkman’s Invincible or Harry Potter or even The Magicians. Maybe you still rock a Motorola RAZR but long for an iPhone 3GS, DROID or BlackBerry. Are you into How I Met Your Mother, LOST, BSG or Myth Busters? The point is that we all have varying interests but we cross paths at one point or another. We’re all nerds one way or another.

Think of TECHLAND as the water cooler for nerds. Or, the way I see it, TECHLAND is the result of some weird orgy involving Jeff Albertson, a Cylon, Lev Grossman and Nikola Tesla. Weird, right? But it just works.

Stick around. It’s going to be one hell of a bumpy ride!

And also, what about those Star Trek codes? Did I miss that, or was that just a ruse to trap us in this strange new blog world? You know, like the creepy dude from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang who lures the kids to their doom: “It’s all free today, kiddie-winkies! …”

@dsheehan5 stick around! We’ll have video game and movie codes.

I am one of said new people, Church. If, by new people, you mean someone who’s been working alongside Lev at TIME.com since early ’06. As for Lev, I’ll pretend I didn’t read his comment. Happy days.

Lev, Techland is starting to grow on me a bit too. The comic-book style layout helps balance the imagery the term “techland” put in my head.
lookin forward to the new site!

The front page layout is a little confusing…I just want a list of what’s new!

  • thebro88

Noticed ads on the site. Cha-Ching. Is this like a working girl/pimp dynamic with you and TIME. Just pay them a cut of the ad dollars at end of the month…behind TacoBell. Hope you guys are getting a slice of that fat money cake.

Great. Another clump of sand in my daily bucket of procrastination….then again, the new site is actually giving me some cool design ideas.
Everything looks good—looking forward to where we’re headed!
