District 9 was good because it overcame its bad writing (the dialogue is not 300 bad, but it's bad). The acting is mediocre. A 'Best Picture' film needs additive decomposition. Each part should be enough to hold its own against other films nominated. Visually, District 9 does. Dialogically, the film is a big pile of epic fail.

Comparisons to Dark Knight belittle the work the Nolans and Goyer did. It was well written, great visually, and left the viewers I saw it with (as well as you, Mr. Steven) questioning if they'd blow up the other boat. District 9 did not leave the metaphysical pangs Dark Knight did, not by a long shot.

Sure District 9 tells an interesting story, one made more interesting with South African political knowledge. But it does not hit home with many the way Dark Knight did. What District 9 exhibited was that suspenseful documentary-style story telling intertwined with outstanding special effects can wow audiences. But, at least in my humble opinion, it is not 'Best Picture' material.

Maybe it'll make the 10 nominees. I won't be especially upset if it does. But, if it does, I feel it will somewhat typify watering down the nominee field so that the average moviegoer has seen more than a couple of the nominees.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie. But I wouldn't watch it more than once or twice. Lets face it though, if Harry Potter makes it, this NEEDS to make it for integrity's sake.
