DC Unveils Earth One

It’s a big week for DC Comics and the DC Universe as a whole. You’ll be seeing a pretty big announcement sometime this week on Techland in regards to DCU in 2010. But until then, DCU’s The Source has unveiled Superman: Earth One and Batman: Earth One. Two of DC’s most iconic characters will have their first year stories retold in a completely new way. I was beginning to wonder what was going to happen in 2010 for DC. I’m down with Earth One in theory and excited to see what Johns has in store for Batman.

J. Michael Straczynski will write Superman: Earth One and artist Shane Davis will give us his take on the man of steel. Geoff Johns will take the reigns of Batman with Gary Frank on visuals.

To accomplish their goals with these books, DC needs to find a whole new way to reach out to non-comic book readers. This may be stating the obvious, but it’s a nut the comic companies have yet to fully crack. I still contend there’s a huge potential audience they currently don’t have and these might be good starting points for a new effort to get them on board. The trick is convincing people to pick them up in the first place.
