The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Trailer Is Up

My predilection for urban sorcery is well known. But I am declaring the jury “still out” on this one.

The problem I have with movies like this is that they can’t seem to decide whether they’re young adult movies — i.e. cute and ultimately inoffensive — or actual grown-up treatments of sorcery — genuinely frightening and real-feeling. Kind of leaves you nowhere.

Plus I love Nicolas Cage when he’s at his best, but I’m getting some oh-god-not-the-bees vibe off him in this one.

But the trick w/ the car at 1:38 is cool.

    This looks like the same basic idea as T.A. Pratt’s Marla Mason novels — only without Marla, so therefore not nearly as cool.

    Pros: Gotham sets inspired by The Dark Knight, effects inspired by Timur Bekmambetov, music by Nine Inch Nails, Monica Belluci

    Cons: Plot inspired by Walt Disney musical segment, villains inspired by The Mummy, that annoying kid from Knocked Up, Nicolas Cage
