Ghostbusters III: Reitman Will Suit Up Again (Proton Pack, Of Course)

Oh Ghostbusters.

Is there a better sci-fi comedy out there than the first Ghostbusters? And is there a more frustrating follow-up than Ghostbusters II?

I think it happened to me about three times during the holidays, where I would flip on a cable channel, ecstatic to see that Ghostbusters was on – only to realize a minute or two later that this was the sequel. Then I’d scramble for the remote.

MTV broke the news that not only is Ghostbusters III well underway, but an initial script has been turned in and a script revision is already in the works. Shooting should begin this year, which points to a 2011 release. From MTV’s Movies Blog:

Reitman said that the script from “Year One” writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky is in and that a second draft is currently in the works. He also confirmed that he will indeed be returning to direct the coming sequel, as had been previously speculated. “They have delivered a draft,” Reitman said of the script’s progress. “We are working our way through another draft… good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed… read more

This is big stuff. Reitman is back to direct, which points to a quality script. There are rumors that Bill Murray might just go show up as well. Sigourney’s rearing to go. I’m pretty stoked.

Let’s just be sure, though, that we don’t take this thing into Spider-Man 3 territory, okay people? How about a sequel that we’d want to watch as a holiday cable rerun!
