Miss #3: Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh

Miss #3: Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh

If Apple were to release a limited edition Mac today they would be able to fetch a premium, but that certainly wasn’t the case in 1997. Within a year of its release, the TAM went from $7500 to $1500.

This is not a miss. This was a piece of art for the ones who could afford it. You don’t call Rolls-Royce a miss just because it has hefty price tag and sells only few models a year.
It was a technological marvel in it’s days. iMac’s grandfather.

hahaha are you kidding me gasior? lay off the mac pills. Im a big a fan of them as anybody, but this thing is a total piece of junk…i looks like a alarm clock/cd player..and thats by 1997 standards

No, Gasior was right. I remember when this came out. It was more of a concept than an actual computer. Remember when this came out and what all the other computers looked like. I am pretty sure this came out before that imac and this concept was quite new, but it was a boutique type of computer, more of an celebration of design and art. This is what most users who don’t get apple don’t understand. Just hold the much loved and hype droid next to an Ipod. Which looks better? I know looks are not what it is about, but apple is one of the only companies that has always considered it an important part of the process. Put an imac 2009 next to any dell.

It was a miss…. never heard of it and don’t know a single person that had it. I think I saw some at the landfill.

  • baklavasi

snowskiman…you belong in a landfill. And while you’re there, can you gather that TAM and have it properly recycled…thanks.

Looked cooler than the Compaq I had back in the day.

This is the same computer Jerry Seinfield had in his apartment! I have been wondering for years what the hell I was looking at!

  • michael57net

I bet Jerry goes with an Apple Laptop in the new Seinfield series.

Wow! you apple guys sure need to lay of the iCrack. You guys will never admit that apple made a bad product. I mean, say one bad thing about apple and you get a bunch of nerds ready to burn you’re house down. It’s a company trying to sap as much money as they possibly can out of you! And, before you guys start to bang on my door with a baseball bat, know this. I’m an IT student who actually knows about computers and i do own an ipod (the only good apple product) so i’m not loyal to any brand. I buy what works and guess what… i bought a pc

@lordartos, I argee with you totally!! I don’t own a ‘I-Pod’ (the only ‘Apple’product I owned was a I-Mac when I had a record pool in Madison, Wisconsin) my ‘Philips’ Go-Gear has twice twice the memory, plays mp3/4′s, 4gbs and half the price of ‘crApple’s'! I’m not a ‘Fanboy’ of any product, typing this on a ‘Toshiba’,have 3 different brands on MP3 players (sansa,Philips, and a no brand 8gbs mp3/4 wristwatch)and the brand is not a ‘buy me’ to me. The features, add-on,price guide my purchasing not the lastest rehash by God, opps I mean Mr. Jobs. The Appleheads camped outside the Apple store here in N.Y. to get the lastest ‘I-Phone’ (I wonder if the ‘I’ stands for ‘Idiot’) only to find out after they purchased it they couldn’t get a signal to make or receive a call unless they bought a ‘Apple’ rubber band to place around the phone! They bought a $400 phone and have to place a $10 rubber band around it to make a call, LOL!!

I can’t say if it was a flop or not since I don’t know if they came close to selling out of this “Limited Edition” Mac. However, it was supposed to be a pretty glamorous piece of hardware. Think about it, flat panel LCDs didn’t become easily accessible until the year 2000 (if that).

    Here’s a footnote from http://apple-history.com/ 20th Anniversary Mac. Enjoy :)

“I just wanted to add a comment about the 20th Anniversary Mac. I was actually selling macs retail at the time of it’s release and there was a very Apple-esque promotion based around the celebration. You mention that it started at a retail of $10 K. But what this included was that a limo would deliver the Mac to your house, and a man in a Tuxedo would set it up for you. We only had one customer who actually went through with this, but as far as I know, the setup was delivered as described. Not bad for $10 K.

    Ben”
