Miss #1: Apple USB Mouse

Miss #1: Apple USB Mouse

Where do we even begin? The USB Mouse was introduced in 1998 along with the iMac and befuddled users with its hockey puck shape and ridiculously short cord.

I wouldn’t call it a miss. I loved that mouse, it was a perfect fit for my hand and it was easy to manipulate. I hate when people (usually who never worked with it) call it a miss and bad design.

It plugged into the keyboard, so the short cord was a feature.

@gasior, it wasn’t as bad as people make it out, but it wasn’t good either. Main problem was that you couldn’t orientate it by touch alone, you had to look at it every time you grabbed it.

completely disagree with this pick. actually it was a brilliant design. The cord was short because the design of the iMac didnt require it to sit under the table. it plugged into the keyboard so it was actually a very very nice design. I had 5 of them in my dot-com business, and they were really useful and efficient.

Agree with all here; the iMac mouse was great design and execution.

I used it and hated it. My work actually bought a plastic piece that attached to it that made it longer and easier to use.

No problem with the short cord, but the mouse itself was terrible. Great for kids and people with really small hands, but the rest of us? Terrible. It was a hang-over from the NeXT merger. The NeXTstations all shipped with little round hockey puck mice. For some reason, Mr. Jobs was extremely enamored of the design – even though it sucked.

I followed a link from CNN to this site.

This list of hits & misses has been created by completely incompetent people (or, more likely, a dude on his sofa). It sure undermines whatever credibility Techland ever had.

I will never visit Techland again, that’s for sure.

I hated using this mouse, I agree that it is a miss.

Apple and apple users have told me over and over how stupid I am for not buying their products that I would be hard pressed to purchase anything with their logo.

I had a first gen iMac, and the mouse was a pain because of the orientation issue. But I fixed that for practically nothing by sticking one of those clear rubber nibs (used to soften the slamming of cabinet doors) onto the middle of the button. Then, it was simple to get oriented by feel, and it didn’t mess up the look of the mouse at all.

Slightly painful, but not a full “miss” in my opinion.

I never minded the hockey-puck mouse, and I have large hands. But then I have never clutched mice; I control them with my fingertips.
It was difficult to keep it oriented, though. Thank heavens for the cord.

  • Jabrwock

Peter, did you just pick that cord thing from a picture, or did you ever actually use a Mac?

As others pointed out, the short cord was NOT an issue, BECAUSE the keyboard had 2 unpowered USB ports. So a long cord was a HINDRANCE, because you had all that cord looped all over your desk.

Yes it was a horrible shape, but it wasn’t a miss because of the cord length…

I liked this product actually, it worked and it was different. The short USB cord didn’t really bother me, it’s not like I needed a 7 foot cord for a mouse that doesn’t move but maybe 7 inches on a surface. You can nit pick most any item this one just receives more attention than others because it was new and it was different than it’s counterparts.

    @ gigadude
Calm down, dude. you are obviously one of those overly loyal apple fans that love apple more than their own mother. You guys buy their product, not because they are great and no one can compete with it. you do it for the apple label so you can be one of those dorks at starbucks screaming ” hey! look at me! I’m using a crappy product with a rainbow colored apple on it! I’m cool!” what tools! i mean, i never really liked apple, but if it was a good product, i’d buy it. that’s why the only apple product i own is the ipod. But, what made me despise apple ( besides the fact that they want to bring back the days of paying for everything and not allowing certain apps just because the cant put a price tag on it) is these people who act like they just joined a gang just because they bought an iMac. IT’S NOT THAT SERIOUS
