Penelope Cruz in ‘Pirates?’ Yes, Please

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the lovely Penelope Cruz is in talks to co-star alongside Johnny Depp in Disney’s upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

The men in the office were too busy drooling at the thought to really articulate why this is a great idea, so I’m handling this one:

Where so many large franchises go wrong in casting their female characters, Pirates always seemed to get it right. First, they chose new comer Keira Knightley, who was beautiful, but had talent.

You mean hire an actress who can act? (Gasp!) Yes. That’s exactly what I mean.

Films like Transformers flaunt expensive explosives and Megan Fox’s cleavage, but the performances are void of anything resembling acting. (Read it: Megan Fox, You Suck)

Meanwhile, Knightly went on to earn an Oscar nomination and two Golden Globe noms after her first Pirates film, and then there was the equally amazing Zoe Saldana, who was cast as the sharp-talking Anamaria. Do I even need to mention what Saldana has been up to lately?

So yes, Cruz is a perfect pick. She’s beautiful. (Check.) And, with one Oscar already in her pocket and another nomination this year, she’s definitely talented. (Check.)

She could be the breath Pirates needs to put wind back in its proverbial sales. And who knows, maybe we’ll see a Jack Sparrow love interest on the horizon.
