Board Game Film News: Battleship Signs Oscar Nominee, Keeps Subject Matter

When I’m not wearing my Techland goggles, I’m just your average film buff. Or maybe that should be film snob. Either way.

And right at the top of my list as one of 2009’s best films is The Hurt Locker, the awesome, exhilarating day-to-day chronicling of a year in the life of a bomb-defusal unit in Iraq.

I’ve been waiting on news about what Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner plans to do next, in a bid to follow up his unexpected best actor nomination. Well, Screen Rant has it on good authority that he might just be saddling up to do Battleship. The movie. The movie based on the board game. Which shall include aliens.

You just can’t make this stuff up.

Yes, apparently Hollywood, in all its infinite wisdom, has green lit a Battleship blockbuster. Featuring aliens. And yet no studio would pony up to give Dead Snow – the awesome film about Norwegian medical school students vs. Nazi zombies – the time of day. After opening on less than a handful of screens, Dead Snow slugs its ways onto DVD today.

But Battleship, the alien-riddled Battleship, gets itself a major studio and an Oscar nominee as star.

Who needs a drink.
