Nintendo Announces DS Successor, 3DS

It really makes us wonder why Nintendo even bothered to send over a DSi XL to US press the day before Nintendo Japan’s 3DS announcement less than 24 hours later. Yes, I know the DSi XL has been available in Japan for quite a while, but I’m just saying.

Details are skant, but the 3DS will offer gamers a 3D experience on the next-gen handheld device sans glasses. Further details will be made available at this year’s E3 in June. We do know that the 3DS will be backwards compatible with DS and DSi titles. It won’t be in the market until sometime before the end of the fiscal year ending March 2011.

Is this also supposed to be the same device that features an accelerometer? Also, this means that Nintendo will have the DSi, the DSi XL and the 3DS on the market all at the same time. And, are they still making the DS Lite?

I am a bit surprised, and not surprised all at the same time.
Nintendo doesn’t usually just crank out some piece of crap. But we are having 3D forced on us by so many different tech producers they probably felt obligated to follow. (I am really tired of the junk “technology” surrounding 3D, until it doesn’t require glasses, we are dealing with variation on 1950s and earlier tech.)

I think the best thing that could happen for all of us is to ignore this product.
