The Streamy’s Audience Award: Who Will You Pick?

Voting for the Streamy’s Audience Award began yesterday after the 10 finalists were announced by comedian Nick Thune. You can cast one vote per day (per computer, at least) for your show of choice until the winner is announced during the live awards show on April 11. (Nominations are given to the 10 shows with the most online nominations from Dec. 15, 2009 through Jan. 18, 2010.)

Last year’s inaugural Audience Award went to Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day, with Harris and Day both taking home trophies for Best Actor/Actress in a Comedy Series. (Click here for Dr. Horrible 2 news.)  This year, Day’s series The Guild is up for the award, and might even be this year’s front runner. Get voting, folks.

And the nominees are…

I worry that award ceremonies like these are going to create as much backlash as they do awareness. During the Streamys last year you could see other nominees openly getting annoyed at The Guild and Dr. Horrible winning everything. I don’t see how The Guild doesn’t clean up again. This isn’t a knock on The Guild, I think it’s clearly the best done webseries out there, but… maybe they could create a limit on how many you can win?

That sounds ridiculous because this is only the second year, but I really do worry about people getting turned off. Does that make any sense?

@Rorschach – Makes total sense. What I love about the Tonys (the best award show out there, IMO) is that they do not allow revivals in the same category as the new musicals, and your nominees are new each year – a clean slate each year. This is in the best interest of the industry as a whole. More shows are recognized for outstanding work and attention is passed around accordingly.

That said, I think last year was an anomaly with Dr. Horrible becoming so hugely successful. While The Guild is wonderful and is probably the front runner in the top category, I only counted 8 nominations overall. (I believe there are nearly 30 awards.) I don’t think The Guild will be able to achieve a clean sweep, but I do think that it will win at least 4 of its categories.

I think this year is the first year without a huge mainstream success, and I’m curious to see how things go.

But I see your point, absolutely.
