I was lucky enough to chat with artist Nathan Sawaya last week, right in time for his New York gallery debut.

Sawaya is the type of guy you admire just for having the guts to quit his job as a corporate lawyer six years ago to become an artist who does incredible work with children’s toys. While we talked, Sawaya told me that his passion stemmed further than just fine art and LEGOs. “I meet families who tell me that this is their first time inside a fine art gallery, and if I can open up that dialogue, then I’m happy. Kids go to museums and look at statues and they might be inspired, but it’s not like they can go home and start sculpting some limestone. I’m using things they have at home.”

The exhibition, “BRICK BY BRICK: The LEGO Brick Sculpture of Nathan Sawaya,” will be showing in the Chelsea Agora Gallery until April 13, 2010.The gallery is located at 530 West 25th St., near 10th Avenue. The gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 6pm. And for those of you not the New York City area, more of Sawaya’s work is currently touring museums around the country. Currently, they’re resting in Scranton, Penn.’s Everhart Museum until May 2. Check his Web site for the full list of tour stops.
