Verizon Getting the iPhone This Fall? [Update: Specs]

I hate to do it but I have to.

The WSJ is reporting that Verizon will land the iPhone this coming fall with production set to ramp up on the CDMA version in September from Pegatron. Oh, and a new iPhone is slated to launch in June or July for AT&T. The former bit of news is important because the WSJ doesn’t just publish any ole rumor. But then again, the news comes from the same writers whose sources said the iPad would launch with a front-facing camera.

Also, as a sidenote, I said back in November that Verizon would get the iPhone this coming June. Whether or not that bit of scuttlebutt is just an announcement is unclear, but, hey, the WSJ says its true, so it must be, right?

Update: The venerable John “daring fireball” Gruber has chimed in on the WSJ’s iPhone story from earlier today with the following list of purported specs:

Keep in mind there’s a big difference between “is” and “appears to be”. And they have no actual details of the next-generation iPhone. Nothing. Not the A4-family CPU system-on-a-chip. Not the 960 × 640 double-resolution display. Not the second front-facing camera. Not even the third-party multitasking in iPhone OS 4. All they have is that there’s going to be a new iPhone this summer, period. Thanks for the scoop, Yukari Iwatani Kane.

Hmm…front-facing camera on a 3G device, huh? Doubt it.

I’m done with the iPhone as a phone, it’s merely a development platform for me now. My next phone will likely be a Windows Phone 7 series. Can’t wait to see what HTC comes out with for that platform.

I would consider buying one. But I really don’t need much of what it can do, so probably not.
Still, it would be nice to have the choice.

Lets keep in mind, Verizon Wireless is 45% owned by Vodafone, who sells iPhones many other places worldwide outside the US.
It seems Verizon and Vodafone have not been happy with each other lately, and I think this may be something real.
But will Apple make a “special” Verizon iPhone, that is a whole other question.
