Could the HP Slate Trump the iPad?

HP sure is putting an emphasis on what features it has over the iPad in the latest video for the Slate. SD card slot? Check. USB port? Check. Camera? Check. Video conferencing? Check.

Thoughts?

It could…but it won’t be as popular as it won’t be as well known.

It doesn’t have the itunes store either so its lacking.

I would definitely get this over the iPad. Anyone know what kind of OS it is running?

    HDMI out? Check.

    720p recording? Maybe.

Similar weight and thickness to iPad? Check.

Battery life, heat and fan noise? To be determined.

3rd party app support (right click, shortcut keys), Hulu and virtual keyboard demo? MIA.

Really runs that smooth on Atom/1GB RAM/Unified Memory Architecture Graphics? It could happen. Hopefully the world has changed since the last time I used a PC but up till now bundled software which is supposed to help the interface has always been the first thing I chuck as it is typically a buggy resource hog. If they cut back on the lens flare it could look sharp.

watch the poor Slate get labeled a copycat for launching a few weeks after the ipad.

    I’m a Slate guy.

I think websites like grooveshark and pandora will kinda of solve the music store problem…if you have internet all the time and you can use these to save custom playlists and *not* pay for it, then you don’t really need the itunes store, right?

Here we go again. Remember the dozens of “iPhone killers” people kept talking about?
One has already fallen apart…joo joo, the iPad killer.
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/193707/joojoo_tablet_reviewed.html?tk=rss_news
I will say the HP slate looks pretty cool, but so did the Palm Pre. Remember how that was going to kill the iPhone? Now, not even a year later, Palm is struggling to stay alive.
My guess is that the HP will suffer from some hyped expectations, HP will not support the thing the way it needs to, and it will not be a major product next year.
It is good to see some stiff competition to Apple’s product, computer makers don’t seem to be giving Apple the exclusivity it had with the iPhone for as long. I think that was because no one took the iPhone seriously. (Same with the iPod)
There is a whole list of competitors that Jobs & Co. will have to deal with:
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/192496/slate_wars_15_tablets_that_could_rival_apples_ipad.html
So please, @lexagrey, keep making your check lists so I know what to watch for. I don’t expect you will make a similar list of problems with these competing products as you find them. I will leave that to our intrepid reporters at Techland.
I can count on you guys, right?

Here you go, it is a good start:
    http://techland.com/2010/04/06/more-hp-slate-details-549-starting-price-five-hour-battery/

Base price higher than iPad, check.
    HP’s wonderful support, check.
    Half the battery life, check.
    Lower resolution screen, check.
    Slower WiFi, check.
Non-upgradeable 1 Gb of RAM (running Win 7), check.
    Window 7 UI, check.

Until the thing comes out, we won’t know anything for sure. But given HP’s reputation, I am not holding my breath it will be anything as great as this article would imply.
I would like to see the Courier become a real product, though.
Remember, it is all vaporware until it hits the market.

  • tereglith

Notice that the question being asked about it is “will it be an iPad killer?” Apple has already ‘defined the genre’, so to speak, and it’ll have the recognition that the Slate never will.

  • bignumone

You know, @tereglith, I couldn’t agree with you more. I think I wrote that exact comment in a blog somewhere else.
I hate to come off as an Apple defender, but my god these Windows guys can be irritating. So much so I sink to that level.
Can’t they just admit when something is cool and leave it at that? When other (rumored} pads come out, talk about how cool those are. But what difference does it make what brand it is?
