Smaller iPad Coming Next Year?

The iPad isn’t even a full week out of the gate and already a DigiTimes analyst is hearing from “upstream component sources” that Apple may be planning a 5- to 7-inch iPad for the first quarter of next year.

Apparently it “will be priced below US$400 and will target the highly-portable mobile device market and consumers that focus mainly on reading and do not have a high demand for text input.”

If true, it’ll be interesting to see what resolution the display will be. It may very well sit in between the iPhone and iPod Touch display at 480×320, and the iPad’s at 1024×768. Of course, this is all speculation until officially confirmed and the first quarter of next year is eons from now as far as gadgets go.

I’d prefer some QOL enhancements like multiple user profiles and tabbed browsing. Many reviews I’ve read have said that the whole tough screen dynamic becomes an order of magnitude more powerful on the larger screen. Going smaller so soon seems like a step backwards.

I actually like this idea. The other part of my hesitation has been portability.

It will be the mini-iPad, and they will change the name of the other to…wait for it…
    the maxi-iPad.

    Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Since they all do basically the same things, why don’t we just call them all iGadgets which come in the varieties of small, medium, and large? e.g. “I’m going to place a call on my small iGadget.” “Oh yeah? Well I’m gonna write an e-mail on my large iGadget.” “Well, I’m going to play pac-man on my medium iGadget.” It strikes me as more logical.
