FPS fanatics should get ready to get freaked out all over again when another dose of F.E.A.R. hits consoles and PCs later this year. Warner Bros. Games announced the threequel to the scare-centric first-person shooting franchise with the trailer on the game’s official site. The F.E.A.R. series originated with the Monolith development studio and won players over for an atmospheric experience that blended bullet-time play mechanics and psychological horror. The series’ plot focuses on Alma, a supernatural mutant who can warp reality, and her two sons Point Man and Paxton Fettel, who are the games’ hero and villain respectively. This new game–developed by Day 1 studios–promises something called Divergent Co-op.  From the name, it  will probably offer simultaneous yet vastly different experiences for players controlling Paxton and Point Man. There’s no evidence of what that might look like in the odd FMV trailer but some sign will surely pop up sooner or later.

So far, the biggest news with regard to F.E.A.R. 3 is the involvement of master horror director John Carpenter and Steve Niles, the comics writer best known for 30 Days of Night.  Niles worked on the game’s script with the Day 1 dev team and Carpenter has lent his touch to the game’s cinematics. 2010’s looking like it’s going to have a bumper crop of top-shelf FPSes and F.E.A.R. 3 is just the latest shooter aiming to join those ranks when it hits this fall. We’ll keep you posted on just how scary it looks.
