Just after midnight, 2K announced that the folks behind BioShock 2, 2K Marin, are currently developing a “re-imagining” of the storied XCOM franchise. For those that don’t remember, the XCOM franchise was a hit in the mid to late 90s and 2K acquired the rights from Atari in 2005. When it was announced that Ken Levine and the crew at Irrational (formerly 2K Boston) were not tied to BioShock 2, the Internets freaked out and assumed they were behind the XCOM reboot. Clearly not the case.

2K promises a “unique first-person shooter experience” combined with the “suspense-filled narrative” and puppies. Okay, maybe not puppies.

“Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K.

XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity’s struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

No word on release date, but it will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PC.
