While Cameron’s effects are unarguably superior to Irwin Allen’s The Poseidon Adventure, it’s the sincerity of the reactions to the ship’s crash that make the film great. The story follows a group of passengers as they rush through the belly of the boat, revealing human nature at its worst. Again, while Titanic focuses on the formation of a romantic connection between Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), Poseidon narrows in on the feral survivor mentality invoked by the ship’s passengers. It’s the panic, the mind f— that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
