Avatar Blu-ray, Book Giveaway: Put Some Na’vi In Ya

Oh James Cameron. You conflict us so.

You tantalize us with Arnold Schwarzenegger as our favorite maniacal terminator (who almost made the cut for our all-time hottest sci-fi robots.) But then you give us Titanic, which wasn’t just overlong but also a little overly sappy (don’t worry, we’ve come up with 10 disaster films that are way better).

And then there’s Avatar. The movie that I’ve already ranted about plenty, proclaiming it the future of cinema. Cameron may not be the best when it comes to icebergs and inter-class romances. But blue aliens on a distant, bioluminescent planet? He had us at banshee.

Cameron and co. have been kind enough to toss a couple copies of Avatar our way – not only five copies of the movie on Blu-ray disc, but also the book that goes behind the carefully-manicured reality of Pandora. Avatar: A Confidential Report on the Biological and Social History of Pandora, is written by Maria Wilhelm and Dirk Mathison, and this was actually this book that served as my initial point of reference, for all the natural wildlife and human machinery taking up space on Pandora.

So here’s the deal: In honor of the Avatar Earth Day DVD release tomorrow, and the “Avatar Program,” which will allow DVD purchasers to adopt one of the one million trees being planted on behalf of Earth Day and receive a virtual hometree, we have five combos to giveaway. Five sets of both Avatar on Blu-ray and Avatar the book.

How do you get yourself some of this goodness? Easy: Post a comment here, with your personal pick for the classic film that most deserves a 3D reboot. Just name the film, and tell us why. Make your case.

At 3 p.m. EST, the contest draws to a close. At 3:05 p.m. we will pick the five commenters who have best convinced us with their pitch. At 3:10 p.m., come back and look at the bottom of this comment string to see if you’ve been selected. We’ll then have you e-mail in your addresses.

Time to get cracking!!

Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back ! Cliche but the movie I think most of us would LOVE to feel even more a part of. The Hoth Battle Scene, Cloud City, The I Am Your Father scene…3D would be the ultimate effect for our generations touchstone Sci-Fi movie !!

  • narmonteto

2010 movie, because well it’s 2010 and it’s The Year We Make Contact and it would be nice to do a remake :)

  • http://sth.freeshell.org/ stharward

Along the same lines as narmonteto, I wish that “2001: A Space Odyssey” had been shot in 3D. No remake of this film should ever be attempted by anyone, period. But if 3D conversion technology gets really good in a couple of years, I’d pay to see an upconverted version.

A more feasible 3D remake: “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”. Lots of adventure potential, and the contrast between a claustrophobic submarine and the openness of the ocean would be really interesting.

  • bacchus78

I’m voting for Temple of Doom, simply because it’s one of the coolest movies ever.

  • sc28

Reboot? You mean remake? Well remake Logan’s Run in 3D. Not “throw things to the camera” 3D but that whole world immersive 3D. If you mean just take a current movie and project it in 3D then Alien and Aliens (I am sure Cameron has some Aliens footage lying around to bolster the director’s cut even more).

  • jongwk

This might be blasphemy to purists, but the original Metropolis deserves a 3D makeover. Think about it: Great story and themes, fascinating characters and locations, and the very first (sexy) android. It’s the cradle of all good sci-fi films.

  • itsanhonor

I’m hoping it’s not too late for this since initial planning has already started, but Dune deserves a remake in 3D in the same way Avatar was produced. I believe 3D works best when it’s used convincingly to immerse a viewer in an entirely different experience than reality. Like Pandora, Arrakis was meant to be an utterly alien planet to the reader with its own bizarre ecosystem and unthinkably hostile environment. Pandora (for all its plot weakness) was one of the few movies that made me forget I was watching a movie, just like Dune was one of the first books I read that made me forget that I wasn’t just in my living room reading about Arrakis.

  • doubleang

I was about to say Temple of Doom (how could you not with that boulder chase scene?), but saw that someone else did, and Star Wars is the other obvious choice, but someone else chose that.
Because it happens to be the most recent movie I have (re)watched, Im gonna say Fifth Element (does this count as a ‘classic’?). It is a trippy scifi movie, which is good enough there alone. The film features lots of contrast between very bright and very gritty elements, which, as we have seen, worked splendidly in Avatar (Lush Forests vs metal Human constructs). The movie’s action isn’t over the top, but there is enough that some of the fight scenes between Leelu (sp?) and the bad guys would be fun to watch.

Plus any reason to go see Milla Jovavich wearing next to nothing on the big screen is a good enough reason for me.

  • zjfelling

Jurassic Park. Velociraptors in 3-D; do I need another reason?

  • pcjensen

I’m going to suggest Dark City for three reasons:

First, I think that the film does not get the recognition it deserves. It is an excellent film, but no one I talk to has actually seen it. A re-make will be good way to explore the same themes and attract a new audience.

Second, Dark City had one of the most tangible worlds I’ve ever seen in film. I love the way the world always changes, yet always “feels” the same. I think 3D visuals would add to that tangibility and increase the immersion.

Third, the fight scene at the end with everything exploding and the device rising from the ground would be awesome in 3D.

I’d like to see a remake of The Matrix. I can think of quite a few scenes that would be amazing in 3D, but the much-parodied bullet dodge would be nuts.

  • calcanuck

The Matrix — the bullet time sequences in 3D would be even cooler. Need I say more.

  • vorshtyn

Aliens. Assuming that the 3-D process would be more in the vein of Avatar and not Class of the Titans, the setting of Aliens would make for an amazing 3-D experience. From a cinematic standpoint, the immmersive experience provided by Cameron’s 3-D tech would make the cramped in spaces the marines and Ripley faced on the planet all that much more nerve racking. In addition, you’ve got a perfect monster, one that’s always leaping at you (in Facehugger form) or charging you (in adult form), and let’s not forget those distending snapping jaws or the alien Queen’s whip tail, all of which would be over the top amazing in 3-d.

In addition, if one were doing a reboot rather than a conversion than more time could be spent addressing how the colonists got the eggs from the eerie confines of the crashed alien ship. One could also spend more time on the surface of the planet. After Avatar, I can only imagine what kind of landscape they would come for the marines and Ripley to encounter.

Finally, from a technical and business standpoint, it’s already a Cameron property and he’s got the best 3-D tech around right now.

All in all, I would give much to see a 3-D Imax reboot of Aliens.

  • pavery3

The original 3 Stars Wars would bne awesome! The greatest scifi flicks of all time. Imagine Vader and Fett in 3D. Image when Luke falls after Vader cut his handoff. In 3D that would be great. Or when the Falcon is trying to get away from the Star Destoyer! Lucas think about it!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • http://novaoblivion.wordpress.com/ novaoblivion

Just like pretty much everyone else it seems Star Wars of course! Some of the old Star Trek movies would probably be cool as well.

  • craazyville

I am going to say what everyone else was thinking…..Van Damm movies, any of them….all of them. Could you imagine his roundhouse kicks in 3-D? it would be amazing

  • skinnieguy

    Wizard of Oz.

It doesn’t have be a reboot just add 3-D to the movie. There are a bunch of scenes built in for 3-D….the tornado scene, munchins singing and dancing, and flying Monkeys!!!

  • mrhomn333

Forbidden Planet, for an update on the technology, and especially because I would like to see the Id Monster in 3D.

  • huynhdan

This goes into the whole anime realm, but still one of the best sci-fi’s of all time, but Akira would be amazing to see in 3D, just imagine that blobbing mass of an arm coming at you!

  • http://curtislu.wordpress.com curtislu

King Kong – I think that 3D would suit this movie since it there is a lot of interaction with king kong and the environment such as climbing the buildings and swatting at the helicopters. Also there are different scenery such as the jungle and I think that 3D would put you right in the jungle as well as in the big city. It would almost be like going on the universal studios ride in your living room.

  • http://freemantim.wordpress.com freemantim

Call me crazy but I’d love to see a 3-D live action retake on Cowboy BeBop. A perfect blend of sci-fi space action, planet-side chases and gun action, plus enough actual character development to make it not just another popcorn flick.

If Cowboy BeBop isn’t considered classic enough, then my next pipedream remake would be to see Little Shop of Horrors in 3-D. Nothing like the tentacles from Audrey II coming in at all angles.

  • ajf2128

While I agree with nearly all the suggestions made so far, my personal choice has to be Spider-Man 2. Obviously, experiencing Spidey swinging through the streets of NYC in 3-D gives me serious goosebumps but there is a much more specific reason for me. The fight between Doc Oc and Spidey on top of the subway practically screams “OMFG Watch me in 3D!!!!”

The good doctor’s arms would shoot off screen every which way and Spidey dodging and ducking through not only his opponents’ strikes but also the surrounding architecture would probably make me faint. At one point Parker dives through an impossibly small opening of an overpass as he attempts to catch up to Octavius and explodes out the other side at full speed. Seeing Spider-Man shoot through and keep on going right out into the audience is this geek’s dream. Here’s hoping……

  • rydomus

    Blade Runner.

Not only a revolutional and critically acclaimed sci-fi film but one that has so many philisophical connotations.

Could you picture the first scene of Los Angeles coming through the screen and immersing you? Or perhaps the chase at the end? The entire environment of the film would be lovely to while being completely immersed.

And the winning factor: Harrison Ford 3-D. Talk about man.

  • albinofrog

“The Lord of the Rings: trilogy- sure it’s cliche, but that trilogy was both visually stunning (can you imagine Lothlorien or Rohan in 3-D??) but also, brilliantly written.

Plus, I’m an American anthropology student currently studying abroad in the middle east who has talked to Iraqi refugees in Jordan, and Avatar is totally a metaphor for the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

  • thebro88

I would go see Starship Troopers 3-D in a heartbeat. A ton of slick visuals there that i think would look great with an extra dimension. For instance when the wasp-like bug crash lands on the frightened colonel, pancaking him all over the outpost (mid movie). The 3-D propaganda sounds good too “Would you like to know more?”

  • oseas215

I would love to see a remake of “Back to the future” in 3d. All of them were awesome, but the second one shows us a future as it was imagined in that time… how awesome it would be now to see a future in the inmersion of the 3d tecnology?

  • usp45

Unless a film is shot from the ground up with 3D in mind (like Avatar) I’m not sure it’s a good idea to try adding it on later. I could be mistaken; but, so far I don’t think we’ve seen any good efforts on this front.

On the other hand, maybe taking a REALLY old movie (like Metropolis) and sticking in 3D would be similar to the coolness of sticking color on an old black and white film for example (and in the case of Metropolis would be double cool).

  • jjab0726

The Thing… it was a great movie, but I would love to see it redone and somewhat modernized.

Another one that NEEDS to be made is “Ender’s Game”. That book must be made into a movie.

  • http://rerun00.wordpress.com rerun00

Any one of John Holmes many skin flicks. Visualize. The horror of it all in 3D.

  • moviefan1229

Jurassic Park, Could you imagine seeing dinosaurs in 3D it would be amazing! enough said

  • curse7781

I’m surprised that most studios haven’t made a 3D version of Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind, so much potential to be had there. A great story to accompany the visuals as well.

I don’t care if it started out in animation but if made into 3D, much of the environment and the characters would be beautiful.

That’s my two cents, and I’m sticking to it!

  • pepersd

Terminator 2. Cameron’s action masterpiece would be a marvel in 3D if done right. The sheer sight of the T-1000 and various chase scenes alone warrant a 3D conversion.

  • sanador1

    Roger Rabbit!
The move back and forth from 3-d to 2-d worlds could be enhanced with amazing effect with the current 3-D imaging technology. Also, the toons in 3-d while in our “real world” would be much more convincing with 3-D imaging to reinforce the illusion. While not your most traditional ‘sci-fi” film, it would be a huge hit if done well.

  • piperdown81

    Flight of the Navigator
A classic movie that has plenty of scenes that would look amazing in 3D, like watching the grey ship come zooming past you, or when they’re flying in it and showing the world below, or the scene where it launches straight into space.

  • direxnipe

My pick goes to The Goonies. i mean come on, what movie would be more fun to watch in 3D what with all the adventure, gadgets, and of course a 3D Truffle Shuffle. Not much more could make me happier :) There isnt much more i need to say, just why arent we doing it right now!!! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y128/idale78/truffle_shuffle.jpg

  • greenehawk

    Ghostbusters!

I think 3D is gimmicky in a lot of cases, but 3d ghoulies flying around would work well if the new film kept the mix of comedy and sci fi.

Don’t you want to see Slimer and especially the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man tearing up the big screen for a new generation?

Needs to have a bill murray appearance somehow as well.

  • rully06

A.I.: Artificial Intelligence. One of the most misunderstood, underrated films of the last decade. A.I.’s beauty would leap off the screen like no other, in 3D; a 3D teddy, Rouge City, the many unique robots, Apocalyptic Manhattan, the flesh fair sequences, “Dr. Know” — it could be an even more beautiful film than it already is. Sadly, I don’t see it happening; the movie wasn’t necessarily a massive blockbuster, but I believe it’s one of those movies that deserves the 3D treatment.

  • Steven James Snyder

Thanks to everyone who took part! And to be honest, I’m feeling a lot of your suggestions. These would almost all look great with some spiffed-up special effects. Maybe we should do a separate article on films that deserve the 3D treatment (and also those that should never even be considered!)

But there can only be five here. That’s all the stuff we got. So here were the five explanations that impressed me most. Can the winners e-mail tips@techland.com with their address, so we can get the goodies your way!

@rully06 and “A.I.,” for a shameless – and successful – citation of my top sci-fi film of the decade.

@usp45, and “Metropolis,” for suggesting something I had never even thought of: Getting younger audiences excited about silent films through enhancing the visual presentation.

@stharward, and “2001:” The best sci-fi film ever made, now with the trippiest 3D wormhole sequence you’ve ever imagined

@curtislu, and “King Kong:” I’m hoping you meant the Peter Jackson version. Because some of those final sequences, with the airplanes above the city, are so vertigo-inducing that I think they could be among the coolest 3D shots ever

@albinofrog, and “Lord of the Rings:” I’d rather see LOTR than see Lucas mess with “Star Wars” any more. You just know he’d do 3D to the special editions, and we’d have to watch all this extra CG crap clutter up the screen again. Also: You’re an anthropology student. So you need all the free swag you can get!!

  • frmattuu

IMO 2012 would be really cool in 3-D just some of those scenes would be perfect.
like the scenes with the meteors or some of the buildings falling over or even the limo coming out the building i think would look cool.

  • rully06

Where is the book and movie being shipped from, if you don’t mind me asking. I’m anxiously awaiting its arrival, lol. Thanks!
