Electron Boy Is Our Hero

When I read Erik Martin’s story this morning I started to cry a little. I don’t know why but I just did. Erik lives in the Seattle area and he’s 13 years old. And he’s always wanted to be a superhero. I mean, what kid doesn’t want to a superhero? (Hell. I still want to be a superhero when I grow up.) Erik has liver cancer and last Thursday, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the city of Seattle pulled off one of the greatest wishes of all time.

You see, the Seattle Sounders were being held captive at Qwest Field by Dr. Dark and Blackout Boy (aka Edgar Hansen and Jake Anderson from Discovery’s Deadliest Catch). What you might not know is that Erik happens to have a superhero alter ego by the name of Electron Boy. Before Erik was about to leave for school on Thursday, Spider-man gave him a ring and asked for his help. Erik complied. Another local superhero by the name of Moonshine Maid swooped in and picked up Electron Boy in her DeLorean. Local police escorted Electron Boy and Moonshine Boy to Qwest Field where Electron Boy was directed by fans to the locker room. The Sounders thanked Electron Boy with a standing ovation, a jersey and autographed ball.

If that weren’t enough, Dr. Dark and Blackout Boy popped up on the Jumbotron and showed a video of Puget Sound Electric employee Jim Hutchinson trapped in his truck’s bucket at PSE HQ. Erik hopped back into his DeLorean and motored to PSE HQ where he rescued Hutchinson in front of more than 250 whooping PSE employees. But it’s still not over.

Someone tipped off Electron Boy on the dastardly duo’s whereabouts, so he got back into Moonshine Maid’s DeLorean and headed over to the Space Needle.

People went crazy and cheered for Erik. Dark and Blackout went to jail. Electron Boy was handed a key to the city and had the day named after him.

All Electron Boy could say was, “This is the best day of my life.”

And now I’m getting teary eyed again. This is what’s right in the world. I wish it happened more often.
