T-Mobile myTouch 3G Will Get Android 2.1, UI Overhaul

During my meeting with T-Mobile last week, Andrew Sherrard, the VP of Production Innovation, informed me that first generation myTouch 3G owners will soon get an update that modifies the vanilla Android UI to match the updated UI that T-Mobile has built for the myTouch 3G Slide including key features like the Genius Button sans hard Genius Button button. They’re currently testing the update internally to work out all the bugs before deploying the update to all.

On Tuesday, Obama hosted the second White House Science Fair, an exhibit of more than 30 student projects that ranged from a system to detect nuclear threats to a prosthetic hand to portable disaster shelters. For nearly an hour, Obama toured the displays and visited with students, pressing them for details and admiring their work.

And, what about us Mytouch3g users? When will we see an OTA update to 2.1?

    We’ve all been patient.

Maybe you misread the above text. This is me telling you myTouch 3G owners that you’ll be getting the 2.1 update in the near future.

huh…if I already rooted and installed Cyanogenmod, can i still get this update? Do i need to do anything?

  • http://twitter.com/thepeterha Peter Ha

You won’t get the new update when it rolls out if you’re device is rooted. You’ll have to wait for cyanogen to bake a new ROM.

I’m guessing T-Mobile will start using their own internal user interface overlay in lieu of HTC’s own Sense if the MyTouch 3G Slide is anything to go by. Makes sense, as carriers are looking to further brand their Android devices in order to stand out from straight “with Google” Android devices.

Is this really true? I hate to put you on blast or anything but AndroidSpin is already basically saying that this is not true in the recent post.

Is it possible for you to confirm this update or something? This meeting speaking of a upcoming mytouch Sense UI update gave me hope but after seeing that this is flat out not true on androidspin I don’t know which to believe.

I never said the myTouch 3G was getting HTC Sense UI. I said it was getting the myTouch 3G Slide UI built by T-Mobile.

How is this update going to be delivered? Automatically? I don’t have a data package, but I’m nearly always connected to WiFi, will this be sufficient?

Or will this also come in a downloadable package

Peter I’ve been following your posts on the myTouch 3G Slide and I’ve read your posts on the Nexus One. I’ve determined that I want to get either one or the other w/ T-mobile but can’t say for sure. Any suggestions for a first time android phone user switching from a blackeberry?

I’d like to know the answer to treleung’s question too, I’m in the same boat.
