New Inception Trailer: Hooking the Heist Thriller up to the Dream Matrix

Man oh man: Christopher Nolan promised us a film that would blow our minds. And after re-watching the new Inception trailer a good half-dozen times, I think my mind’s already blown.

This seems to be The Matrix meets What Dreams May Come, The Bourne Identity, The Cell and Mulholland Drive, all smashed together into one pulverized core. It looks exhilarating, awe-inspiring and haunting, all at the same time:

I see five different plot strands – all of them intriguing. You have the strategerie of the real world, where Leonardo Di Caprio’s agent plots his attacks. You have the young newbie in Ellen Page, who is at once mystified and mortified about what she’s learning. Then there’s the ground-up construction of these dreamscapes, the subconscious cat and mouse games with the marks, and then the sheer visual inventiveness of what Nolan is trying to do. Seeing men floating in air, watching cityscapes flip upside down, beholding motionless dreamers being probed and cities implode in slow-mo dream-melt, this is going to be one of the best-looking films since, well, Nolan’s Dark Knight.

I know everyone’s psyched about Last Airbender and A-Team and Prince of Persia, but don’t for a minute count out Inception. This is a sci-fi spectacle that’s putting an emphasis not on the cerebral. And if you’re anything like me, and crave a blockbuster that’s one stop ahead of you philosophically – not just viscerally – this could be the hit of 2010. What do you think of the new trailer?
