ABC Renews V: Dear God, Why?

Oh, the horror. ABC has renewed alien series V.

Because of its rating boost in recent weeks, the show has been picked up for a 13-episode second season full of non-aliens and non-plots. (Sigh.) I guess an undressed alien princess really will get you results.

ABC wasn’t so gracious with its other shows, axing Better Off Ted, Scrubs, FlashForward, Romantically Challenged and brand new series Happy Town. Apparently, ABC is pulling it from the schedule for the next few weeks, and will fill its slot with a Primetime special on May 19 and a showing of Transformers on May 26. Transformers. Oh, that’s got to hurt.

Ted is dead. That is sad.

Better Off Ted always made me laugh — unlike that other Office show on that other network. Although, I was always surprised that it was an ABC show, due to it’s political incorrectness, any chance some other network will pick it up? Please!!

And shouldn’t there be a few episodes left — when will those air — if ever?!

Wow. V gets renewed and FlashForward doesn’t? ABC deserves to lose viewers.

I loved the original V. I was ten when it first aired, and it was exactly what I wanted at that age. This new incarnation was a failure from the start because it tried to be a drama when the story demands that it be an adventure.

Battlestar Gallactica worked as a revamp, because it was a space adventure first and foremost. It stuck to the themes and pace that the audience of a show of that type want.

To really reimagine V, you need to look at what was so scary about the first show. The Visitors looked like us but they really wanted to eat us and take our water. A clear conflict. That should have been revealed at the end of the first episode, then it should have gotten scarier with each passing episode.

Oh well. I’ll miss Ted. That was a really funny show.

ABC joins NBC in the race to the bottom and to irrelevancy.

V has it’s moments, but mostly a hackneyed soap opera (guess it’s a perfect match for Desperate Housewives – imagine the crossover possibilities…).

Flash Forward at least has some imagination in it. I’m sad to see it go, although the premise does seem to not allow much longevity without it turning more convoluted.

Better Off Ted was never given a proper chance. Too clever for broadcast tv, especially ABC…

Flashforward is one of the worst shows to debut in years. The plot and characters are terrible. There is no one to care about and the big mystery is not intriguing. The characters decisions and actions are solely driven by the plot so everything they do feels contrived and out of character. In contrast, V is a timely social commentary that features an excellent villain that is both tactical and cold blooded and a hero that is in over her head. Surprisingly both of these characters are women and yet they are the strongest characters on the show. V really hits on the strengths and weaknesses of our society and mankind as a whole. Does V have some weak moments and plot points? Of course but it shows promise and has had some great episodes. Better Off Ted being cancelled is disappointed because it was such a fresh and original comedy but it was expected. The ratings were poor and the humor in the show wasn’t mainstream enough to really catch on.

“Dear God”, indeed! This series has been an “act of God” (a euphemism for “disaster”) from the outset.

Did V have promise? Yes, indeed, tons of it — all squandered and frittered away, not least by ABC’s inexplicable decision to punch a 3-month hole in the middle of its schedule. They did the same thing to FlashForward, of course, which wasn’t strong enuf to survive the ordeal. I suspect that some programming exec at ABC is preserving V just so he (it always seems to be a “he”, doesn’t it?) can say, “See, that 3-month gap wasn’t the blunder you were all making it out to be.”.

HAHAHA! Happy Town sucked! I watched the first 2 episodes on Hulu the other night. Glad to see it go.

I am in shock. The new slick and soulless version of what could have been a great re-make has continued to depress me with its existence. I can’t believe they ordered more episodes.

    Well, Kyle XY was…

damn…Flashforward had its plot problems, but I was really hoping it would get renewed. I mean, what other show could boast Merry the hobbit as a bad-boy accidental terrorist, Penny from Lost, Gauis Baltar as a skitzo and Agent Moronica from The X-Files as a sexy, sexy temptress. Plus Leon was essentially the exact same person he was in BSG!

Uh, am I the only person who actually likes this show? ok, i’ve never seen the original, but even if i had, it’s a different show. if it totally copied the original, it wouldn’t be it’s own show, correct? it would be a stupid copy.

i like sci-fi shows, and i like the fact that they’ve kept some mystery to the show. i don’t want to see a V with no skin – yet. people complain about some of the “boring” characters – i think they are normal (boring) people who are about to have a fire lit under their a$$, and very soon, the characters will really develop with all the turmoil.

    just my two cents
