Poll: Was The Google Background Image Really That Bad?

Come on Internet world, was Google’s photo background really worth that groupthink meltdown that went on this morning?

Did it seem like a bit of Bing rip-off? Sure. But Google has always been experimental with its homepage, not everything’s going to work, right? Just get through the day and everything will be back to normal. Yeah. Right.

So many abject to the change took to Twitter/Facebook/blogs/comments in protest that Google abandoned it’s one-day switcheroo for its classic search page. Perhaps this is lost on me, but I wasn’t bothered in the slightest. Were you?

You forgot the “I loved it” option. I had a gorgeous pic of a sunset…and it’s gone now. People are such whiners!

Damnit, I go to google to search, not to have ‘art’ thrown at me.

  • Jeff Sloan

I agree – you forgot the “I loved it” option. I liked the sunset too! now I’m back to white! Unless I log into my iGoogle.

  • soulfliesfree

I agree with the above 2, I kept re-reading it going wheres the I freakin’ loved it!!!! I thought it was refreshing.

Agreed! I enjoyed it as well! Change is good every now and then! :)

I was kind of shocked. But then I was sad, because I realized I’m never going to be on a playground as amazing as the brass steampunk robot playground.

I Absolutely Loved it!!! Thought it was beautiful art and so colorful, What’s up with people today???

It made my eyes bleed while simultaneously causing involuntary terror induced vomiting.

I just get straight to my Google results via the dedicated search portal in my Safari web browser, meaning that I never have to go thru their home page, so it was no big deal to me. But, if that picture you’re showing above is any indication, it would have driven me nuts in about 20 seconds.

tereglith, that is an artist named Tom Otterness, and he is awesome. And because that was the image I got when I went to the site, I loved it.

  • gum0nshoe

I guess I missed it, but I found the handy link at the bottom left of the page and now I’ve got an image of my choice that comes up so long as I’m signed in.

Yay new feature that’s mostly useless?!?!?

    It is pretty though.

Still bothered at your inability to diferentiate ” Its ” for
it is. It’s means ” it is” You meant to use “ITS” not
    “It’s”. Big difference.

  • Allie Townsend

@mannyh1331 – typos happen. just apparently never to you. fixed.

NOOOO idea what everyone is kvetching (that’s Yiddish for complaining annoyingly) about. It was so pretty and fun! You forgot to put the like/love option in this poll. Too bad! I wish Google would do this on a regular basis. I’d probably make sure to go to their homepage (right now I’m barely there cause I search inside Chrome) on a regular basis to see what they are going to wow me with each time.

  • doubleang

I don’t get what the big deal was. Its the same sort of thing I get when I log into iGoogle.

  • http://crichton007.wordpress.com crichton007

My picture is still there and I like not not love it. If people don’t like it then don’t set one.

  • g3peto

Awful, I thought I was redirected to Bing, or that google was bought by microsoft. I like Google for it’s simplicity, not artwork.

  • happyfinger

It’s not that bad… It’s just a matter of taste and preference.. the images did not affect the performance of the nor the search result just the home page. :) I do loved what they did… but I sure hope that they can do that even if you are not logged into your Google account like Gmail.

So now I’ve missed Google Pac-man and Google backgrounds. Who goes to Google’s homepage? Not me. That’s what the search bar is for.

  • toastnobutter

It wasn’t what I would have chosen for art.
Plus it looked to me like an arial view of the gulf oil spill region which I interpeted as an eco-political statement from Google. OK to raise awareness but I felt like it was being crammed down my throat.
