Bay: Transformers 3 Will Be 3D, Less Dorky, And A Big Finale

It’s the transformation that no-one was expecting: The third Transformers movie will, according to director Michael Bay, get rid of “the dorky comedy,” take things more seriously, and bring the movie franchise to a close. Oh, and it’s going to be in 3D, as well.

Bay and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura talked to USA Today about the third and, apparently, final movie in the series, and started things off by promising that it’ll be better than last year’s Revenge Of The Fallen; di Bonaventura said that they “tried to do too many things in the second movie, which didn’t give enough time in any one of them,” while Bay, more bluntly, called main villain the Fallen “kind of a (expletive) character” (Quick! Guess the expletive USA Today doesn’t want you to know!). The next film, Bay promises, “really builds to a final crescendo… As a trilogy, it really ends. It could be rebooted again, but I think it has a really killer ending.”

Plot details are being kept underwraps, but what is revealed is that the movie will pair Sam Whitwicky’s failure as a human being (I’m not just being mean; di Bonaventura describes the character’s journey with “Shia has this great line: ‘You know, I’ve saved the world twice, but I can’t get a job’”) with some kind of revisionist history involving robots in disguise, according to Bay:

The movie is more of a mystery… It ties in what we know as history growing up as kids with what really happened.

And guess what? Megan Fox isn’t in the movie for entirely character-related concerns! Let Shia LeBeouf explain it to you:

I love Megan and I miss the girl…But Sam and Mikaela became one character, and here … you have discovery again from a new perspective.

Yes, that’s exactly why she’s gone. Suuuuure. But who cares, when we know that Shockwave – AKA, the badass who took down Megatron in the 1980s comics I grew up on – is going to be the main badguy in the new movie? Yes, that’s all it took for me to get excited about this third movie. I really am that shallow.

Jesus said that, if someone strikes you on the cheek, turn the other cheek. By my count, we’re now out of cheeks. After #2, why on Earth would you possibly get excited by #3? It’ll just be another overloud, overfrenzied, mindless CGIfest, regardless of how often the producers repeat the same promises they’ve failed to deliver on twice already.

The Fallen was a sh*t character and Sam making it into Prime heaven was…frakkin stupid. I really could care less about what happens in the third film but I’m going to watch it anyway.

I have a hard time believing that Bay could actually pull that off. Yes, I’ll still watch it.

I just feel like, with the rise in movie prices and falling quality that I do have to vote with my money.

I’ll wait till this is available to me in some fashion where Bay doesn’t get my money.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, three times? No thanks.

Even if Bay continues to destroy the films, I will alsways watch them because 1)there are always a couple precious moments of truly good story in there and 2) I truly believe without becoming a lifetime fan the night i saw ROTF, there are events I never would have survived, revelations I never would have had, things I never would’ve said or written or did, and someone i never would have become. The few moments of greatness always hiding in a Transformers movie (pardon the pun) really and truly do manage to transform me. No matter how much of a douche Bay usually is.
