Is Blue Beetle The New Smallville?

Smallville may be ending next year, but Clark Kent’s replacement may already be waiting in the wings. Spicing up a slow Sunday, DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer revealed yesterday on Twitter that DCE is preparing a live action television series based on the recent Blue Beetle series. He tweeted,

We have a live-action test of Jaime Reyes’ scarab activating his suit. It. Is. Awesome… If I can break it out of the vault, I’ll bring it to SDCC. LIVE ACTION BLUE BEETLE!!

There was no mention of where the live action series would air, or if any network had laid claim to it yet, but considering the relationship between DCE/Warners (and, for that matter, Johns himself) and the CW through Smallville, in addition to the fact that the CW will have a teen-superhero-shaped hole in their schedule in 2011/2012, it wouldn’t be entirely unlikely that that’s where it ends up…

I’m surprised by how interested this news made me. I think this is actually a good idea, although the formula might follow Smallville’s with villain of the day, which would get tedious by the second season. Especially without the allusions to Superman that Smallville could play off every now and then to keep me interested.

I think that the Jaime Reyes era of Blue Beetle is a decent choice for an animated series, but as a live action drama actioneer like Smallville Im just not feeling it. I’d be more inclined to accept a live action show based on characters like the Teen Titans, being that they are young heroes coming to grips with their powers and being teens in todays society, I think the teen angst would play out well in a drama action series.
