There are few things in life that I’m as committed to as buying the Wii version of Tiger Woods every year. Since I took my first virtual swing with Wii Sports back in late 2006, I remember thinking “Tiger Woods golf will be just like this but a million times better.” We’ve had our ups and downs over the years, but the general progression has been something like this:

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07: “Holy crap, this is the best way to play golf in the history of video gaming. Even though it’s rough around the edges, it’s still light years ahead of every other golf game on every other console.”

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08: “I have now reached gaming nirvana. They’ve worked out most of the kinks and made improvements all around. There are still some rough spots but it’s an overall improvement from the last version.”

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09: “What… the… hell? This new putting system is beyond awful and you got rid of McCord and Feherty as the announcers? I don’t care if this is the first year there’s been online multiplayer, all the good stuff’s been taken out and replaced with poo-like substitutes.”

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10: “Whew, that was close. Now we’re almost back on track. Putting’s been fixed, there’s still online play, and the Wii MotionPlus compatibility has done wonders for the swing mechanics.”

Is Tiger Woods on the Wii still the best way to play video game golf short of installing a full-blown golf simulator in your basement? Yes. Has this year’s version made improvements over previous years? Yes. Are there still little quirks and annoyances here and there? Yes.

Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way first. For starters, the developers seem to have given up on doing anything more with the in-game audio. You’ll hear the same canned shouts from the cardboard cutout-looking crowds that you’ve been hearing for years and the mediocre dialogue between the Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman and ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt, again, didn’t last an entire round before I disabled it. The series still doesn’t do a great job of portraying a TV-style presentation, which I’m hoping will finally get addressed one of these years.

The graphics still border on a strange mish-mash of cartoon-y realism but we’re dealing with the Wii here. If you bought the console for its graphical prowess, you chose… poorly.

But let’s focus on what’s really important: Hitting a little white ball with a stick towards a 4.25-inch hole way, way off in the distance.

Of all the improvements that have been made to the game over the years, none have been as wonderful as the new True View shot mode. It’s basically a first-person view of your ball as if you were actually playing golf. True View, when combined with the enhanced sensitivity of Wii MotionPlus, catapults Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 past not only competing golf games, but past this year’s version of the game on Xbox 360 and PS3 as well if you’re looking for an experience that most closely replicates playing golf in real life.

You get true 1-to-1 motion of your golf club at address and once you’ve completed your swing, your character’s head lifts up and watches the ball soar off into the distance. It almost makes me wish I could put my TV on the floor or play wearing a pair of those head-mounted video glasses. Almost.

And where last year’s initial foray into the Wii MotionPlus arena brought with it a massively more accurate swing mechanic, it’s been refined again this year to collect data not only from your swing speed and the position of your wrists at impact, but also the angle of your swing plane and the thoroughness of your follow-through. The result is that on the higher difficulty levels, you’ll rarely hit a shot perfectly square—much like real life—and you’ll quickly realize the importance of a nice, easy swing—much like in real life.

And just like in real life, you’ll find it hard to play more than 36 holes without needing to take a break. You now basically need to swing just like a full golf shot, which takes as similar a toll on your body as a real day on the links.

There are a few additions to this year’s version—Ryder Cup mode, online disc golf, a much more elaborate mini golf mode—but the general overall polish and feel of the game is pretty close to last year’s version. Casual golf fans probably won’t be as impressed with the various enhancements and the graphics, sound, and TV-style presentation elements are still due for a major overhaul, but for golf purists looking for the ultimate way to get a round or two in during the winter, at night, or when it’s raining outside, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 on the Wii provides a very fulfilling experience.
