While the summer months tend to be a wasteland for new packaged games, it’s been a booming time for digitally distributed ones. Last year saw Shadow Complex and Battlefield 1943 hit XBL and PSN, where they became big hits in the process.

The latest hopeful for summer success is Deathspank, which is being developed by Hothead Games and distributed through EA as part as the EA Partners program.  With many of them coming from Radical Entertainment, the crew at Hothead Games have a good resume of games, including Prototype, Scarface and Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. On top of that, Deathspank sprang from the head of Ron Gilbert, who worked on the beloved Monkey Island games from LucasArts years ago. Deathspank started as a comic strip on Gilbert’s site and grew into a game. Gilbert know how to bring the funny and the game looks like a mix of Monkey Island and Diablo. It’s got an action-RPG template with tons of goofy humor throughout.  And, there might be magic underwear involved.

You’ll be able to grab Deathspank on Playstation Network on July 13th and on July 14th on Xbox Live for the low, low price of $14.99
