This just in from the “It’s about time” department: Marvel Entertainment have announced a new division that will concentrate on television, both live-action and animation. And heading it up is a man with a background in writing superheroes for both comics and TV: Jeph Loeb.

Loeb has been appointed Executive Vice President, Head of Television at Marvel Entertainment, taking responsibility not only for television development, but also direct-to-DVD features. Loeb, who has written for and acted as producer on shows like Heroes, Lost and Smallville as well as written comics such as Hulk, Superman/Batman and Spider-Man: Blue, is appropriately excited about his new job in the official press release:

I couldn’t be happier to accept this new position at Marvel Entertainment, working with both Dan and Alan to deliver exciting, cutting edge television projects. Marvel continues to break new ground in storytelling in both their comic book and film ventures, so, along with everyone here, I’m excited to bring the same brand of excitement into homes across the globe.

With Marvel sharing a corporate parent with the various Disney cable channels as well as ABC, it was only a matter of time before the company started moving into television. Time will tell if Loeb will bring any of his writer’s room comrades from both Lost or Heroes – both of which ended this year – over to head up Marvel series, but don’t be too surprised if it happens.
