How Much Does It Cost To Make The Worst Film Of The Year? $280 Million

It’s (semi) official. M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender currently holds the lowest Rotten Tomatoes ranking of the year. Paramount’s $280 million live-action version of the beloved Nickelodeon series received only a 6% rating based on a ranking system that pools the reviews of film critics into a tidy little score. This means that out of 80 reviews, only 5 were somewhat positive. Ouch.

I look forward to this movie becoming the butt of all future internet jokes related to bad movies.

Let’s look at the competition for “worst movie of the year”, shall we? These figures as of 3 PM CDT on July 2:

    The Last Airbender • TomatoMeter 9/103 = 9% • Average Rating 2.9 • IMDb Rating 5.1 (1430 votes) • Techland domestic gross / production budget ($M) xxx/280 = ??%

    The Black Waters of Echo’s Pond • TomatoMeter 4/17 = 24% • Average Rating 3.7 • IMDb Rating 4.6 (121 votes) • BoxOfficeMojo domestic gross / production budget ($M) 0.2/NA = ??%

    Furry Vengeance • TomatoMeter 5/73 = 6% • Average Rating 2.5 • IMDb Rating 1.8 (1871 votes) • BoxOfficeMojo domestic gross / production budget ($M) 17/35 = 49%

    Marmaduke • TomatoMeter 8/63 = 11% • Average Rating 3.2 • IMDb Rating 1.9 (1190 votes) • BoxOfficeMojo domestic gross / production budget ($M) 30/50 = 60%

Probably the place where The Last Airbender will go down most notably in cinema history is “worst ROI”. Other major contender: The Golden Compass ($70M/$180M = 39%). But at least IT was a halfway decent movie, and it did much better overseas.

I had at one point actually wanted to see this movie but after reading several reviews, I think I will pass. Oh and this is suppose to be the first part of a trilogy so unless it goes gangbusters at the box office (Beverly Hills Chihuahua made nearly 100 Million at the box office.. so anything is possible). I think it will be the last (or Shyamalans last) we will see of the airbender on the big screen.

I’m glad people are being harsh, because I would hate for M. Night Shyamalan to just get away with ruining this great story.

This movie was recieved a rediculous amount of hate from critics. It has been hated on as unfairly as much as Cameron’s Avatar has been hyped unfairly (seriously mediocre movie when you take away the special effects). Yes its a seriously flawed movie, but on the whole I left the theatre after seeing it feeling satisfied. The acting was pretty terrible and parts of the movie should have ended up on an editing room floor. The movie was extremely short at just over 100 minutes to encompass such an epic story and you can tell corners were cut to get it so short. In my opinion it should have been about 20 minutes longer and the time used to develop the characters a bit more and advance the great story. The other thing also missing was the humour of the anime series, the movie was far too solemn and took itself too seriously but then MNS isn’t known for his humour. But for all that there were parts that I felt were fantastic and could have been the basis for a really good adaptation and could still be for the other two books. In closing, don’t believe the over-hyped hate of lazy critics jumping on the anti-MNS bandwagon and make up your own mind.

    @slightlypunky…

Avatar was a mediocre movie when you take away the special effects…? What sort of banal comment is that? We don’t go watch it without the special effect, dumbass. We watch it with the special effects. The special effects were amazing. They made the movie amazing. It’s as stupid a comment as saying, I dunno, There Will Be Blood would’ve been mediocre without the great acting.

But then you saw AirBender which you admit was badly acted, had no humour and wasn’t the right running length, but you enjoyed it anyway. Because a 6% rottentomatoes score is obviously wrong.

    Moron.

Look out slighlypunky you have bad mouthed freekeir’s Avatar. The movie was far from amazing and it was far from original. The visual effects were the only reason I did not walk out. Really they should have ended the movie sooner and did a sequal. Acting was terrible, the story was a rip off of several movies.

I for one want to see what M. Knight has done to the tv show. From people here and friends have stated, the acting is bad. When you incorporate an actor from the Twilight Saga, you know it won’t have Oscar caliber thespians.

Psh.. I just returned and it’s not as bad as people are making it out to be. Sure, its not Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings, but its not The Golden Compass or Eragon either. I was entertained and thought they layed the groundwork very well for the next possible 2 movies. Get a different director and see what they can do with it.

ok i took my kids to see it on opening day…i was just as excited to see it but soon my excitement as well as my kids was blown away by the movie…my kids noticed that many names were mispronounced and a fun cartoon was taken to many different levels. i mean come on was it necessary to show a bone yard of human bones bashed in the heads…that had to be the most disturbing thing in the movie besides the bad acting and the fact that many of the events from the cartoon were not done properly..yes folks i know it is a cartoon interpreted into a movie but even my kids made many comments and they are 6 and 10. having M.Night as a director was a poor choice.i was expecting more Asian actors since it is an Asian based cartoon…god forbid the second one..if M.Night does the second one i will refrain from it.

According to the L.A. times, the production cost was only $150 million, which the film has almost exceeded at the box office already.

Production cost was $150 million and advertising cost was $130 million, to make $280. it has made $183 million internationally. No way it will make back the $280 million.
