Never Mind The New Movie Spider-Man, Will There Be A New Comic Spider-Man?

If a reboot of Wonder Woman made comic fans lose their minds, how would they feel if Marvel got rid of Peter Parker and replaced him with an all-new Spider-Man? Amazing Spider-Man editor Steve Wacker is already teasing that possibility in an interview with ComicBookResources.com, where he talks about what lies ahead for Marvel Comics’ favorite corporate icon:

For the couple of months coming out of “One Moment in Time,” we’re going to be bringing a lot of threads of Peter’s life that we’ve been developing since we started working on the book into one big story, ‘Origin of the Species.’ It sort of gives Pete a moment to assess all the stuff that’s happened to him for the last 100 or so issues. Beyond that, we’ve already started talking about the fact that it might be time for a new, or at least better, Spider-Man. I feel like we’ve done as much as we can do in terms of Peter Parker’s time as Spider-Man.

It’s a short, throwaway comment with no follow-up, but fans are already wondering what it means. If it happens, it wouldn’t be the first time Peter has been replaced; Peter Parker was revealed to be his own clone, and replaced by Ben Reilly, the original Peter Parker (who was later revealed to be the real clone and Parker the original after all, after fan outcry) in the controversial 1990s “Clone Saga” storyline, but surely Marvel wouldn’t be dumb enough to try that again, would they…? Well, I guess we are getting close to Amazing Spider-Man #650. Time to place your bets on the identity of the new Spidey… and how temporary their career will end up being.
