Every week I make some “suggestions” for all those pilgrims out there that get all penitent on new comics day. I’m not here to tell you how to live your life, no no. I’m just saying that these five books here, these right here, well, they probably won’t be bad. Probably.
Batman and Robin #13
I am loving Damian as Robin. As a reader I’m feeling as impatient as he feels for him to just get on with his real career as the Bat. Or at least for Bruce to come back and step back into the cape and cowl. Dick can go run around with his batons all he likes. Leave the real business to the Wayne’s. Speaking of, Morrison is resurrecting a Wayne ancestor in this arc, Thomas Wayne.
Scarlet #1
Bendis and Maleev are back together again and they are producing a creator owned series about something totally new: a vigilante. There’s already been a good amount of hype over this title (Bendis producing no small amount of it. I guess he’s taking notes from Millar?) so it has a lot to live up to. But it’s Maleev after all and it looks to be real street level stuff so I have faith.
Hellboy The Storm #1
What I appreciate most about Hellboy is that by and large you can pick up not only a volume but nearly any individual issue of the character and be all set. Continuity is not king in Mignola’s world. However, when Mignola and artist Fegredo (one of the few that I will accept as a sub for Mignolas pencils) get together good things happen. This is the beginning of the third arc for these two. Not to be missed.
Shadowland #1
I’ve been looking forward to Shadowland for some time now. I can’t say I’m excited for yet another fight between Daredevil and Bullseye. I was pumped for all the street level Marvel heroes to take on an army of the Hand run by Murdock. I’m hoping that I will still get that but I will probably have to sit through those two fighting but not killing each other. Again.
Demo vol. 2 #6
I’m saddened that this run of Demo is coming to an end this week with issue #6. This volume by Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan was one beautiful diversion after another and it’s going to conclude with what is being billed as a heartbreaking tale of two lovers that pay a steep price for a lifetime of happiness.
