Two Minute Video: Wireless E-book Reader Showdown

The e-book wars are in full swing, with Barnes & Noble firing the first shot by dumping the price of its 3G-enabled Nook to $199 and introducing a Wi-Fi only Nook at $149. Amazon swiftly responded by cutting the price of the Kindle to $189 and eventually dropped the price of the Kindle DX to $379. Sony took its time but finally responded this week by dropping the price of its Reader Daily Edition to $299.99. So now that there are all these relatively affordable options, which one’s the best choice?

I, for one, cannot wait to get the Nook Wi-Fi. Christmas can’t get here fast enough!

I was not originally keen on the idea of an eReader, as I LOVE the look, feel and smell of a real book, but with the introduction of the Nook Wi-Fi, with its affordability and great features, I am ready to venture that route. It will not replace books for me, but will be a welcome addition to my library.

@beckie66 I bought the WiFi only Nook and really like it. I got a couple of gift cards for B&N on Father’s day and decided to get a book. The local B&N’s entry way was one huge Nook display. I’ve been keeping my eye on these for a while and now the prices are low I figured this was a good time to get one. the number of books sold for the Nook by B&N alone eclipses what is available for the Kindle. The Nook ties into the free books on Google books, it allows you to “side load” anything you get yourself, whether epub or Acrobat files and even works with digital books I can checkout from my library county system. The Kindle was the first mover but Amazon has locked it down so tight and charges for loading your own stuff wirelessly that I prefer the Nook.

@chrichton007 – thank you for sharing your experience! I have already started downloading free eBooks from bn.com. I like that I am not chained to one source (like when you buy a certain fruit music player, which I do have, so I am not bashing) and that I can even share eBooks with friends if I want!
