Is Chris Columbus The Right Man To Rediscover Superman?

Rumors are flying that Chris Columbus – the man who brought both Harry Potter and Home Alone to the big screen – may be the director of the Christopher Nolan-produced, David Goyer-written Superman movie reboot. An unnamed source told fansite Superman Homepage that an offer has already been made to Columbus to helm the 3D revamp for the character, and that he’s considered “the right fit” for the character by Warner Bros. executives… in part, according to the anonymous source, because he’s not David Goyer:

David Goyer really wanted to direct but nobody from either studio think he’s good in that arena… He’s great at coming up with story and ideas, like George Lucas. It’s his execution where he’s weak which is why people like Chris and Jonathan Nolan and Guillermo Del Toro have had the best results with his scripts.

Personally, I think there’s a bit of a leap from Christopher Nolan and Guillermo del Toro to Chris Columbus – I don’t remember either of them coming up with an I Love You, Beth Cooper or Rent – but it’s hard to argue that Columbus’ Potter experience doesn’t lend him more than a little credibility. Time – and maybe San Diego Comic-Con? – will tell if this rumor turns out to be true.

Uhm….this sounds like a bad idea to me.

Ugh. I was happy about the Nolan/Goyer news originally, but this doesn’t make me happy. I’d rather have someone with a more dynamic storytelling ability.

Agreed. He’s made a lot bad movies.

Chris Columbus is a family friendly movie director. There are plenty of directors who should venture into the superhero realm, and Columbus is not one of them. Kevin Smith would be my first choice, being that he is an accomplished director, and there isnt a director out there that knows more about comics then he does.

I like the idea of “family friendly” for Superman. He’s NOT a dark and gritty character, and that was a big problem with “Returns.”

Batman’s a dark character who does what he does out of grief and other grim emotions. And that’s fine and I like Batman a lot, but he doesn’t inspire hope. He doesn’t point to a possible time when people will stop being jerks to each other.

But Superman is a positive character who does what he does out of hope. One of the biggest problems I had with “Returns” is they changed his signature line to “Truth, justice, all that stuff.” No, it’s “The American way.” If we don’t want it to be jingoistic any longer then take out “American” and replace it with something like, “Humanitarian,” or “Enlightened,” or something and I wouldn’t mind, but it’s got to be about lighting a way forward out of the pit of despair that ends up creating people like Batman.

Superman as a character is about showing us what we SHOULD be.
