Marvels Creators Offer Up New Genesis For Kirby Creations

The creators behind the classic Marvels series (as well as similarly wonderful Astro City) have announced that they’re re-teaming to honor lesser known characters created by Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America and X-Men co-creator Jack Kirby with a brand new comic, Kirby: Genesis.

Focusing on Kirby’s latter, independently-published creations like Captain Victory, Silver Star and Night Glider, Genesis is being described by co-plotter and cover artist (as well as occasional interior artist) Alex Ross as “an ambitious assembly of every Kirby design we can lay our hands on,” with writer Kurt Busiek adding,

Jack Kirby was the premier creative force in American comics history.  And to have the chance to work with his creations in their purest form — some who’ve been seen before and some who haven’t, from the Ninth Men to Galaxy Green to Tiger 21 to Silver Star — and to build a new world and a grand story with them is the kind of opportunity and challenge I couldn’t possibly turn down.  When we started talking about this, there was just so much stuff, so many great ideas, that I was confused as to where we could possibly start. But then Alex described one image — a single moment — and that was all it took to make me say, ‘Got it. I see the whole story now. Man, this is going to be fun.’

And it is. Stand back. We’re gonna need the room.

No release date for Kirby: Genesis has been given yet, but expect more details to be released at next week’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Ross stuff only appeals to me when he has a strong collaborator – mostly Busiek and Waid. The Dini stuff was so-so for me, and everything else was poor.

So this could work, theoretically, but I have to raise something else about Ross:

What the hell has happened to his palette?? I’ve found too much of his stuff (especially the covers) monochromatic in recent years, and I assumed that was deliberate; but now the images for Genesis are just TOO colorful. This stuff just looks ugly to me.

His design sensibility, anatomy, shading, etc., are usually top-notch. I like flipping through his sketchbooks. So where are the subtleties we enjoyed in his best works, like Marvels and Kingdom Come?

    Maybe it’s me?

And so begins the raping of Kirby’s dead body by Alex Ross.

I’ve also felt some diminishing returns from Ross’ work over the last several years. I remember how exciting his stuff was when Marvels first came out. For all of his Kirby-worship, he still hasn’t mastered basic comic storytelling. His covers are beautiful. His sketches are great. I love his Mythology book. But when it comes to telling a sequential story, it breaks down and appears to be getting worse.

And the image in this post is a mess.

I don’t want to get too negative. Ross is a tremendously talented artist and I’ve enjoyed a good deal of what he’s done, but it’s getting harder and harder to get excited about projects such as this.
