Marvel has confirmed that both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger will be released in 3D, and that both will be “upconverted” after being shot traditionally. Directors for both movies, Thor‘s Kenneth Branagh – currently in the middle of post-production – and Cap‘s Joe Johnston, seem excited about the final product, and well aware of how badly it could go. Johnston, who tested 3D cameras for a day but considered it a “nightmare” experience, told the LA Times,

I think it tends to be overused and can be a little bit gimmicky… A lot of people are using 3-D now because they feel have they have to [but] that will come and go and the pictures that deserve to be in 3-D will continue to be. When it’s done bad, it can make you carsick.

Branagh agreed:

We came to feel that in our case 3-D could be the very good friend of story and character for a different kind of experience. I had a healthy degree of skepticism up front… I’ve become somebody extremely excited about working with possibilities of doing it this way.

Unconvinced? Feel free to take your concerns to them directly; both directors will be appearing at San Diego Comic-Con at Saturday evening’s Marvel Studios panel.

(Released to accompany this story at the LA Times, the above brand new image from Thor, with Anthony Hopkins as Odin and, to the left, the first shot of Chris Helmsworth in full-on Thor get-up, including Mjolnir, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki on the right. Trying… not… to geek out too much…!)
