Rumor: Verizon iPhone Confirmed, says TechCrunch

In a rather needlessly lengthy post, TechCrunch contributor Steve Cheney claims that unnamed sources have revealed to him that Apple has ordered millions of CDMA chipsets from San Diego, CA-based Qualcomm. The fabled iPhone for Verizon will supposedly go into production in December.

The entire story is a bit contradictory. Cheney begins by saying, “I am going to go on record to say Verizon will be selling an iPhone this coming January.” And then finishes with, “I can’t say with 100% accuracy that an iPhone will hit Verizon store shelves in January”.

So which is it, Steve, is there going to be an iPhone in January or not? There’s really nothing of substance to the story at all.

Verizon is going to have to support CDMA for the foreseeable future even after they launch LTE. Apple is by no means required to launch on VZ as a 4G device. The iPhone 1 was 2G even though 3G was the new standard at the time. I would say a CDMA iPhone is a very real possibility with a hybrid model coming later.
