I was lucky enough to get into an advanced screening a few weeks ago. It blew me away, and I'd never read the original material. Weeks later I'm still glowing with how amazing the film is, how much SHEER JOY it created in me while I was watching. The visual style is incredible and could have carried the film alone because of how much fun it made watching the movie, but the story and characters and witty repartee all vaulted this film into one of the best I've watched in a long time.

I have to say Michael Cera did not play his usual character, either. It's a departure from his usual typecasting as an awkward/insecure but not totally uncool teen yearning for sexy time. I'm surprised that reviewers would lament Cera, because he really did a wonderful job. The Pilgrim character is a little unsure of himself and marginally awkward, but mostly he is impulsive, self-centered, and bold.

Doug, I think not having seen Speed Racer is a serious failing as a human being. Also, it probably informs this movie's style. (I'll know shortly)

Havent seen it yet but I am stoked. That said, glancing at the "Rotten" reviews on RottenTomatoes, they all seem to comment on Cera. I can see how if someone isn't a MIchael Cera fan (which many aren't) they arent going to like the movie.

Also, you guys should go read NPR's write-up on the negative backlash; good stuff:
