Rage Gets a Release Date, Coming to iPhone Too

Id Software’s been blowing people’s minds every time they show off Rage, their retina-sizzling FPS/racing hybrid. It’s running off of idEngine 5–the latest software iteration from the House of Doom–which features incredibly expressive lighting and animation technology.

But, the caveat with getting to see all that awesome in action is knowing that you’ll have to wait years to get your hands on the final product. It’s id, after all, and they only ship games when they think they’re done. But the wait may not be as long as you think.

During QuakeCon last week, id announced that the date for Rage’s multiplatform release would be September 13, 2011 for North America and September 13, 2011 for Europe. Id co-founder John Carmack also showed off a demo of idEngine 5 running on the iPhone 4, and said that a product using that tech–presumably set in the Rage universe–would be hitting the App Store this year. The iPhone version supposedly ran at 60 FPS and looked amazing, which is believable considering Carmack’s renown as a gifted programmer.

So, you PC owners, start saving up now for a new graphics card. Look for more updates on Rage as we get them.
