What The Hell Is Going On With X-Men: First Class?

Okay, so the news that Rose Byrne is close to signing onto Matthew Vaughn’s soft reboot of Fox’s X-Men movie franchise as Moira McTaggart, Professor Xavier’s one-time love, doesn’t really bother me; for a movie that’s rumored to draw from the Chris Claremont/John Byrne-era of the comic to tell the history of Xavier’s relationship with former-best-friend-turned-mortal-enemy Magneto, it only makes sense to include their character in there somewhere. Similarly, the addition of Oliver Platt as mysterious new character The Man In Black sounds promising, if only because Platt usually brings some level of class and detached amusement to his roles, even if I was previously unaware of Johnny Cash’s mutant powers.

But Jason Flemyng joining the cast to play the demonic Azazel, father of Nightcrawler? I am most definitely not on board with this development one bit. For one thing, Nightcrawler only made it into one X-Men movie (even if he was one of the best things in it), so he’s hardly a mover and shaker large enough to earn a role for his dad in the prequel, and for two, didn’t everyone hate the storyline in which Nightcrawler was revealed to be the son of a demon, thereby explaining his demonic appearance? Why make the same mistake in the movies, especially when absolutely no-one is demanding it?

Couldn’t agree more. That storyline was emblematic of everything that was bad about Chuck Austen’s run. FAIL!

Once again it has to be pointed out that movies can’t just appeal to the Comic Book Guy.
If movies were made to please just one segment of the audience, nothing would get made. Even worse, nothing would make any money.
I have never understood the “they have ruined it!” mindset. The source material is still the same. Making a movie doesn’t wipe all our minds clean and remove the source from the world.

Besides, sometimes the movies do get things right. Watchmen, better dialogue (the comic was written by an Englishman who thought he could write New York dialects) and nuking 15 cities made a hell of a lot more sense than just NY. The Soviets would have laughed their butts off and launched their nukes.
Spiderman- the mechanical web slinger always sounded stupid. Even as a kid (way back in the early 70′s)it seemed that a bite by a radioactive bug should give him the biological power. Where the hell did he store the hundreds of gallons of goo to shoot?

Anyhow, I’m old and crabby but it just seems like too much attention is given to how bad a movie will ruin everything.
Don’t see the movie if you fear your memory will be wiped.
    There, problem solved.

I don’t know if anyone is still reading this thread but it’s getting worse:

January Jones as Emma Frost? Eh, OK I guess but I was looking forward to Alice Eve more. The kicker though? Zoe Kravitz is being cast as Angel. It’s starting to become obvious that they don’t have an affinity for the material they’re working with. This is going to be uglier than the Wolverine movie…
