Lucasfilm Goes After Jedi Mind – No Tricks

I’m not sure that it’s a lawsuit that anyone has been waiting for, but you have to admit: There’s something kind of wonderful about seeing “Lucas Vs. Jedi Mind” on a legal docket.

The lawsuit in question is a $5 million trademark suit launched by Lucasfilm against a company calling itself Jedi Mind, Inc., which sells a wireless headset that, in the words of the Hollywood Reporter, “detects brainwaves on both a conscious and non-conscious level and can even make it possible for users to play games or run software applications with thoughts alone.” The lawsuit comes after two earlier attempts from Lucasfilm to convince the company to change its name, the first of which was apparently successful right up until the point where the company didn’t follow through on its promise to move to a different name. In addition to the $5 million minimum damages, Lucas is seeking to legally force the company to change its name, claiming that it owns “all characteristics associated with the Jedi knights not memorialized in a registered trademark…[including] Jedi robes, the lightsaber weapon, the power to levitate objects, a telepathic oneness with other Jedi and the universe, and the ability to shoot energy beams called ‘Force Lightning’ from the fingertips.”

Wait, “the power to levitate objects”? Lucasfilm is claiming that it owns telekinesis?
