I can’t be the only person surprised at the rumor that Requiem For A Dream, The Wrestler and Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky is in the running to direct the sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, can I? Sure, I know that Aronofosky was, for awhile, planning a reboot of the Robocop franchise for MGM, and also that he’s a comic fan – His The Fountain was a graphic novel as well as a movie – but nonetheless, the idea that he’d happily slide into not only a superhero franchise he doesn’t control, but do so in a sequel to a movie that was, to be kind, not too sucky, somehow seems just plain wrong. Isn’t he… you know… too good for this kind of thing?

As the rumor has it, he’s being considered in large part thanks to his relationship with Hugh Jackman, who starred in The Fountain and is understandably protective of the Wolverine franchise. But no matter how strongly Jackman may feel about Aronofsky, will it be enough to convince Fox that he’s the man to handle what is currently their only successful superhero franchise – especially when his competition is said to be The Twilight Saga: Eclipse‘s David Slade?
